ABOUT THE TELETHON
1) What is a telethon?
A telethon is a media-driven event or project used as a means of soliciting donations from members of the public who can afford it, in order to help improve the lives of those who cannot, through a specific venture.
2) Why are we doing a telethon?
The Inspire Africa Foundation is organising this telethon as Nigeria’s first ever telethon, to engineer change in our society. The funds realised from the telethon will be used for intervention in the lives of street children to help protect them from abuse and violence. The Foundation believes that Africa’s problems can only be solved by Africans, and that’s why it is using the platform of a telethon to get people to raise money together for a common cause.
3) Who can take part?
The Inspire Africa Foundation Telethon is open to anyone and everyone in Nigeria who can afford to send an SMS with their NAME and INSPIRE AFRICA to 35058 or make a phone call to 35059. A call or an SMS costs a hundred naira only, and people stand the chance of winning fantastic prizes with every call or SMS they send. This token amount can make a difference in the life of a street child.
4) When is it happening?
The Inspire Africa Telethon is taking place for a whole week in January. Between the 24th and 31st of January, 2009, people have the opportunity of contributing their widow’s mite to the campaign to make a difference in the lives of our street children in Lagos. The telethon will operate for 24 hours everyday within this period, so people can make their calls or send their SMS at any time of the day or night.
5) How will it be done?
The Foundation will be working together with companies in Nigeria who are the leaders in their fields, such as UBA and Interswitch, who are providing the financial platforms for the telethon to run, MTech, who will be providing content, as well as Nigerian telecommunications giants-MTN, Zain and Globacom, who are the official service providers for the telethon.
6) What will the funds realised be used for?
The Inspire Africa Foundation, with its partners, Moments with mo, UNICEF and the Lagos State Government have all come together to determine and carry out intervention programmes for street children with the funds realised from the telethon and the Inspire Africa benefit Concert to be held on the 31st January at the Expo Centre.
The funds will be used to provide services for street children by upgrading and building reception centres for them, as well as offering them the right information, life –skill training and income generating skills.
7) What are the incentives for participation?
The Inspire Africa Foundation is all about giving back, and that’s why there are various prizes to be won from participating in the telethon. People stand the chance of winning a coveted invitation to the Inspire Africa Benefit Concert that parades an array of International and Nigerian stars. There are also other prizes to be won daily in our telethon draws. Every call made or SMS sent will make a huge difference in a child’s life.
